"newsroom" starts now. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com >>> good morning. thank you so much for joining us. i'm carol costello. first up, president obama and the first step toward new gun control laws. as you might remember, he promised those changes on sunday at a heart wrenching vigil for the school shooting victims in connecticut. this morning mr. obama will announce that vice president joe biden will lead the effort to form new policies and rein in gun violence. this morning's briefing comes as newtown prepares to bury several students and a beloved teacher. vicki soto used her body to shield students from the gunman. the national rifle association finally breaks its silence. the nra promising to take part in a gun control debate it has scheduled a friday announcement. more on that in a minute. first to the white house and cnn's dan lothian. >> reporter: white house aides say this will be a chance for the president to talk more about the process of setting up this effort which, as you pointed out,

across new york and long island, across the connecticut sound and really heavy downpours into boston and drive a little further north and it's all snow. that combined with strong wind is making for a very messy day today. so many people are out and about, trying to enjoy holiday time or maybe just heading back to work or to the stores to return gifts. but unfortunately we're seeing heavy downpours into bridgeport, connecticut and once you start heading to upstate new york, it's accumulation. we're talking about a foot or more for upstate new york, 3 to 6 for places like massachusetts, worcester and the berkshires. the pocono mountains will see about 6 inches of snow and into northwestern new jersey you're still looking at snow as well. this is a strong area of low pressure, it will work its way across the northeast. the cold air coming in behind it will help enhance the heaviest snow across the great lakes and extreme northern new england. we're also experiencing some bitterly cold temperatures right here in the south. this morning it's 35 in atlanta, 33 in birmingham. the cold air i
because it's intensifying following the connecticut school shooting massacre. the nra's president wayne lapierre went on nbc's "meet the press" this weekend saying call him crazy for wanting to put armed security officers in schools. he doesn't mind. nra president david kean told cbs' "face the nation," a ban on assault weapons won't stop mass killings. >> we debated this before. we had a so-called assault weapons ban for ten years. we had what senator feinstein is suggesting. it was allowed to expire. the fbi, the justice department, and others who studied it said it made no difference. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. >> despite the national rifle association's opposition to any new gun laws, president obama insists an action is not an option when it comes to protecting children. while democrats and republicans are upset over the massacre in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some law

picture shows we still have lighter snow falling in new york city, northern new jersey, connecticut and into massachusetts. but that rain is kind of sweeping up into nas kaw county in long island and suffolk and it will come down heavy and hard. snowfall totals 3 to 5 inches across parts of pennsylvania with a little bit of more intensity more towards the center of the state. let's zoom into massachusetts, 4 to 8 inches. expect some higher amounts in this region here towards areas of -- sections of connecticut and into much of rhode island. snow across the entire state. and then you see the winter storm warnings extend to coastal maine. we could see up to a foot of snow into areas of coastal new hampshire and maine especially towards late tonight, early tomorrow. let's time it out for you. notice saturday night at 11:00, storm will be intense. we're expecting brutal winds for much of new england. you can see a little bit of mix in terms of precipitation for the cape and the islands. overall these areas you see in brighter white where we're expecting some of the more intense snowfall
